Enchanted Arms is yet another of the great RPG games PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players enjoy these days. This game is set in a world of fantasy mixed with good sci-fi aspects. The game was released on January 12, 2006 in Japan. From Software is this game’s developer. On August of 2006, the game got published by Ubisoft in North America. Official publishing of the game in Europe was on September of 2006. Pre- publishing rumors regarding the game included that it will be released in multiple discs. That was corrected when the game came out in one DVD only.

The plot of the game revolved around 3 students- Toya, Makoto, and Atsuma. These 3 were not just any students though but learners from Yokohama City’s Enchanter’s University. There they learn about the golems and the fearsome Golem Wars. A thousand years ago, the golems laid destruction all over the land but now, they meekly serve mankind. One day, the three protagonists went to a festival when an earthquake occurred. The meek golems started attacking people again and when they checked on the University, the ‘sealed word’ seemed to have been opened. They then encountered the golem Queen of Ice and thus started the quest to discover more about Enchanted Arms.

The story of the game is quiet entertaining. There were some major character developments that gave more depth to the RPG’s story. The battles in Enchanted Arms are also good. Players can execute plenty of strategies thus avoiding the game from being too predictable. Basically though, the game’s battle sequences are done turn- based. A grid field is also utilized. So things like protecting one character with another by putting him behind a stronger character applies. When the battle starts, you can have 4 of your characters do battle and usually you will start the attack first.

All the characters in the game have elemental affinities. The elements involved include Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Dark, and Light. The rule involving the elemental affinity in Enchanted Arms is this. A character hit by an element opposite that of what he is affined with will receive double damage. If he is hit with the similar element, the damage will be reduced to half. The relations between the elements are these- Dark – Light, Earth – Wind, and Water – Fire. Aside from the elemental and positioning strategies, there are a lot more any player can employ. These include events, leveling up, picking allies, healing and support moves, and more.

When the game was released there were many conflicting reviews about it. Some critics have rated the game just average and some of its features as below average. Others though loved the game and are really recommending it to everyone out there. Many have praised its story line as well as its graphical renditions. A lot of people got addicted to the battle sequences and wanted more. Whatever those critics say, if you are a Role Playing Game avid fan, you must try out Enchanted Arms!
